An incredible tool to use during birth is birth affirmations. Birth affirmations are positive intentional statements that help you focus your mind and heart on your body throughout pregnancy and labor. They replace fear with peace and confidence, allowing your body to release and do the work it was designed to do.
By repeating birth affirmations, you're training your mind to believe that you are capable, strong, and supported. As a doula, I love supporting my clients with encouraging affirmations and reminding them of the strength that already exists inside of them.
The Mind-Body Connection
Your mind has a powerful influence over your body - this connection is often referred to as the mind-body connection. During birth, what you think directly affects how your body responds. When you feel fear take over, your body tenses, your pain threshold drops, and labor may slow down. This is known as the fear-tension-pain cycle.
Stress also affects your baby. When you experience fight-or-flight, your body releases adrenaline and cortisol – hormones that:
Tighten muscles
Increase blood flow to the extremities
Reduce the flow of oxytocin and endorphins.
Tight pelvic muscles can make it difficult for your baby to descend into the birth canal, and reduced blood flow to the uterus and placenta can add stress to the baby.
Oxytocin and endorphins are vital for a blissful birth.
Oxytocin helps contractions stay steady and strengthens the bond with you baby.
Endorphins act as a natural pain reliever in birth.
To allow your body to work as it was designed, it is important to release fear and welcome calm. This is where birth affirmations come in. Replacing fear with peaceful and confident thoughts will help the body relax and open – creating space for an empowering and blissful birth experience.
Birth Affirmations During Pregnancy
Birth affirmations begin in pregnancy. Building trust with the body God designed for you starts with believing just that. Affirm this truth when your anxious thoughts build as birth approaches. Emotionally preparing your mind for birth is the beginning of a blissful birth.
Practice speaking out loud the affirmations you are going to use in birth.
Write them on sticky notes and place them around your house.
Repeat them with your spouse or support person.
Ask your partner, doula, nurse, midwife, or doctor to encourage you by saying them aloud in labor. Taking these steps will set the tone of your birth.
